The Kawasaki disease research project, coordinated by IRCCS Burlo Garofolo and funded by AIFA under the 2025 Independent Research Call with approximately €983,000, represents an important recognition of the excellence of Italian pediatric clinical research and the value of collaboration among national reference centers.

The study involves several institutions within the INCiPiT network, including IRCCS Burlo Garofolo as lead center, IRCCS Meyer in Florence, and ASST Spedali Civili of Brescia, confirming the network’s strategic role in promoting and supporting high-impact multicenter projects.

Selected among nationally funded projects in the field of rare diseases, the study aims to evaluate the use of anakinra as a first-line treatment for Kawasaki disease. It adopts an innovative approach that integrates existing clinical data with advanced analytical methods, including artificial intelligence tools, to optimize therapeutic pathways and improve clinical outcomes in pediatric patients.

In this context, the INCiPiT network plays a key role in coordinating and supporting scientific and operational activities, fostering the integration of multidisciplinary expertise, data sharing, and the application of innovative research models. Collaboration among participating centers enables a more effective response to the challenges of rare diseases, which are characterized by limited patient populations and the need for nationwide studies.
